How To Grow and Care of Cardamom Plant at Home?
Cardamom is one of the most expensive and unique spices in the world. Cardamom hails from the ginger family and is most commonly grown for its seeds, which are used as a pungent and aromatic spice. If you live in a very warm, humid climate, you can grow your own Cardamom plant.
How to grow cardamom?
At first, collect cardamom seeds from capsules that you’ve purchased from the grocery store, it’s best to buy cardamom seeds from an agricultural supply company. These seeds will be free from disease and are more likely to thrive.
- Fill containers with loamy soil. The soil should be slightly sandy so it drains gradually. If you’re planning on transplanting the seedlings to your outside garden, you can use any size container.
- Plant the seeds 0.32cm deep. Push a few of the seeds into the containers and cover each with 0.32cm of soil.
- Water the seeds so the soil is completely moist. Continue to water so the soil stays moist and leave the seedlings in the container until you see at least 2 leaves on the seedlings.
- Grow the cardamom until it sprouts a few leaves. The Seeds should germinate after about 30 to 45 days. It will take around 90 days for the seedlings to become large enough to transplant outside.
Care for Cardamom
Cardamom prefers part to full shade. Avoid planting in direct sun. Consider planting under tall trees in tropical conditions akin to its native rainforests. Water regularly but do not overwater. Cardamom does best in sites where conditions are stable year-round. Flowers and fruits will only grow in tropical conditions, where daily temperatures rarely go below 72 degrees Fahrenheit. Give the plant organic, high-phosphorus fertilizer twice a month during the growing season. Apply after heavy rain, never before.
