How to Propagate and Care for Pink Princess Philodendron

Pink princess philodendron (philodendron erubescens) is a tropical plant with heart-shaped leaves that deserves all the fanfare and applause. Philodendron is a popular and easy-to-grow plant for the home that gives all-year foliage interest with versatile growth that can either trail or climb, and ‘Pink Princess’ is a new and unusual variety. Learn how to grow and care for pink princess philodendron below.

Propagation of Pink Princess

Philodendron is not an easy plant to propagate but can be done from cuttings. Take a branch from your pink princess philodendron tree then cut below a leaf and several nodes, near the stem, then place the cutting in a container of water, ensuring the nodes are submerged. Allow the new roots to grow to around an inch long, then transfer the cutting to soil. Water gently but thoroughly immediately afterwards, to settle the soil around the roots. Place it in a spot which has good levels of bright light but avoid direct sunlight in summer, which could scorch the leaves. Newly-bought plants are usually fine, for at least the first growing season but check to see if the plant appears unbalanced and top heavy. Philodendron ‘Pink Princess’ copes well with being root-bound to a certain extent, if the roots are very congested.

Care for Pink Princess

Pink Princess is an easy house plant to care for. Water regularly to keep the soil moist, taking care not to over-water, especially during winter, and ensure the pot is never left sitting in water. In drier rooms you can stand the pot on a tray of pebbles with water sitting just below the top of the pebbles, so the water evaporates into the room to increase humidity. Misting the foliage daily with a fine spray will also help to improve humidity. This is very important.
