Watering Azaleas: how much and how often?

Azaleas are flowering spinney in the genus Rhododendron, particularly the former sections Tsutsusi and Pentanthera. Azaleas are easy to grow and care for. Garden azaleas require extra water during long dry periods. With indoor azaleas, you should check the soil through the week so often. If it’s too dry, give the plant a little bit of water. Never overwater an azalea, because it is a plant that loves moderation. In this article you will know how to keep your azalea perfectly moist.

When should water?

After planting azaleas in the soil area, including the root-ball, to a depth equal to the height of the root ball. For an extra boost, to stimulate early root shape and strong root development, you can water newly planted Encore Azaleas with a solution of Root Stimulator. Avoid over watering or planting azalea in the soil. During the first year and in the summer, give your Encore Azaleas water spray. Wet the soil two inches deep twice per week. In extreme heat or drought, water three times per week might be helpful.

Watering Level

Always remember you don’t overwater. Azaleas are drinkers, but not swimmers. So don’t put your indoor azalea in a saucer with full of water. Submerge the pot in a bucket with full of water for no longer than 30 minutes. This will give the soil amply time to absorb water properly. Afterwards, allow the roots to drain and return the azalea to its container.

Best way to water

Always water directly on the top of the soil. Use a watering can and never water directly on the flowers. Then take the flowerpot out of its cover pot and pour water into the cover pot to up to two centimeters above of the level at which the underside of the flowerpot sits.
